In 1180, King Alfonso VIII, at the urging of his wife, Eleanor (daughter of Henry II of England and sister of Richard the Lionhearted), donated it to the Cistercians as a convent for daughters of royal and aristocratic families. While some such ladies truly had the call to the religious vocation, for many the nunnery was merely a way for their families to remove them from the opportunity of marriage. That strategy saved the dowers and claims upon titles and land that their families chose not to allow.
